Sitting or Standing in the Office – Which is Best?

Sitting down too much is proven to be seriously bad for your health. People who sit for long periods every day have an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. In addition to this sitting burns very few calories and many studies have linked it to weight gain and obesity. This is obviously a major problem for office based staff who sit at a desk for most of their working day.

As an office furniture supplier what can we do to ease this problem?

Luckily there is one solution, which is the use of sit-stand desks. These desks are height adjustable so that you can change the working height of the desk to allow the user to alternate between sitting and standing.

Some of the science backed benefits of this type of desk are as follows:

  • • Standing lowers the risk of weight gain and obesity
  • • Standing at a desk may lower blood sugar levels
  • • Standing may lower the risk of heart disease
  • • it-Stand desks appear to reduce back pain
  • • Standing at a desk helps improve mood and energy levels
  • • Sit-Stand desks may even improve productivity
  • • Standing more may help you live longer – a recent review of 18 studies found that those who sit the most are at a 49% greater risk of dying than those who sit the least

Workplace Obesity – A Weighty Problem?

A recent 2017 report by Public Health England reveals that obesity rates amongst office workers are substantially higher than the national average. Figures claim that 66% of UK adults started 2017 either overweight or obese, and that a shocking 77% of those working in administration are claimed to be obese.

As the average weight of our population increases the requirements for large, overweight and obese members of staff that you may have that fall into this category are often overlooked by their employers when choosing the correct furniture for their needs. This can result in discomfort in the workplace and possible posture related issues, which in turn could lead to serious health and safety issues and reduced performance from the employee.

As an office furniture supplier how can we help make adjustments in the workplace to ensure the Health and Wellbeing of anybody that may be affected by this?

The first solution is to invest in the correct chair for the user, which would be suitable for weights ranging from 20 stone to 40 stone dependent on the individual’s requirements. These chairs would feature:

  • Uprated gas lift mechanisms
  • Uprated bases
  • Larger seats and backs
  • Heavy duty mechanisms and componentry
  • Strengthened armrests or width adjustable arms
  • Optional seat slides

This type of chair would reduce the need to regularly replace broken or worn out chairs, which not only saves money in the long term but also alleviates the embarrassment of the user. It would also ensure that the user is comfortable and can work efficiently, and reduces the likelihood of sick leave due to posture problems and back issues.

First Place!

James Faultless took first place in the Final at Coventry Stadium on Saturday 18th June.

This was James’ first final win since upgrading from the Juniors to the Seniors, and was made extra special as the win was taken in the last meeting that the Stoxkarts will be doing at Coventry, as the Coventry Stadium is earmarked for closure to make way for housing.

A Faultless performance

“ A Faultless performance as brothers fill up podium”. Sibling rivalries were taken to a new level by the Faultless Racing Team at a meeting at Buxton Raceway on Sunday 5th June.

Out a field of 33 Stoxkarts racing in heat one, the brothers came 1st,2nd and 3rd. Remarkably the karts finished in number order 47 1st, 147 2nd, 247 3rd. The odds of the brothers coming first, second and third in kart number order and age order must be unbelievably high!

Stoxkarts is a contact racing formula and takes part on short oval race tracks throughout England and Scotland.

The team consists of James Faultless, 16 years old in kart No.47 and Tim Faultless, 29 years old in kart No.147, whilst older brother Craig Faultless, 30 years old races Kart No.247.
